General work at Purley Bury Bowling Club.
In 2002 our Green Keeper of many years died. He was to all intents and purposes “Mr Purley Bury”, he spent most of every day down at the Club. Not only did he tend to all the maintenance on the green, but to anything else that needed doing and as can be imagined he left a large pair of shoes to fill!
However to fill this void, it was decided to try and organise working parties, this was done and has continued to work very satisfactory. We have undertaken some fairly large projects, as well as doing the small tasks like changing a light bulb.
Listed below are some of the projects we have undertaken and/or are currently being worked on?
- The Intruder Alarms System has been updated ensuring more security to the club house and outbuildings.
- We built a veranda with decking to enable more people to sit outside and watch the bowls. This has proved to be very popular.
- Over the past couple of years the earth banks behind the clubhouse have been consolidated by building a 120 ft x 4 ft retaining wall. Prior to this the earth banks were haphazardly retained by scaffold boards and corrugated iron.
- The path from the Brancaster Lane gate entrance was taken up and re-laid’
- Our front windows have been enlarged and replaced also the front doors with UPVC-double glazing
- We are about to re-route our guttering so that we can save rainwater to use on the green, this will not only help us when a drought order is issued, but will reduce our water costs.
- This year we have renewed our Sprinkler System for the green.
- Where the allotments used to be. We are hoping to create an All-purpose area.
- We are very lucky that some of our lady members spend many hours tending the gardens on the site so that throughout the year there is a ‘riot’ of colour awaiting our visitors.
There will be more things to do in the future; as long as there are willing hands to do them, the Club will never struggle.
